 It's Been Awhile...
Well will you look at that?
2009 came and went and I haven't posted anything of significance to this blog for quite some time. Back when I first started writing here, there weren't that many distractions and I had a focus, a sole mission of attracting the favorable attention of this one special lady who is now MY special lady no thanks in part to my long diatribes here, but I digress.
So anyway, now with Twitter, Facebook, my iPhone and oh yes, work taking up most of my free time and energy, I find it more and more of a concentrated effort to put my thoughts into long, coherent words -- here. But fear not, I am in no way closing shop, just merely saying postings will be far and few in between but posted nevertheless. Besides I still need the medium just in case something wordy comes along and the 140-character limit Twitter allows just won't do.
Stay tuned, more blab to come.
Or not.

 Revisions
Someday, I'd like to tackle my own website and redesign it. Someday, I'd like to update the internals with a full CSS and table-less layout. Someday, I'd like to migrate out of my (finicky) blogger account and use my own CMS to serve up my blogs. Someday, I'd like to implement all the awesome JavaScript tricks including several JQuery and Lightbox libraries to handle my portfolio/design gallery page(s).
But alas, that day is not today.
Someday.

 September Morn'
Shut yourself out, close the office doors and play angry music that gets you all riled up (and potentially volatile), design something incredibly amazing and then completely rip it apart, empty the inbox without reading a single email, shred all types of paperwork found cluttering your desk, ignore all phone calls and instant messages, slip out of the office and climb into the car, get a venti iced coffee, drive in and around the city while crossing your fingers for a sudden downpour although the sky is depressingly clear, point and laugh at bewildered tourists mulling the Vegas Strip, head for Red Rock canyon, bomb through endless stretches of asphalt while cool winds race through your face and down to your armpits, accidentally drop the drink through the open window, cuss and grumble alternately, miserably drive back to the office, go through the back door undetected, finish up pending work, tidy up your desk, shutdown the computer, leave without uttering a single a word before the day is officially over.

 Fun Times
So our crappy wireless router finally decided to say "no more!" and crapped out last week. The good news is that we are now able to justify upgrading to a router that is capable of handling both wireless N and G duties (lurve dual bands) without alienating either user. Suffice it to say we are geeking out at work and loving this new toy, er, equipment — finally, my Mac can take full advantage of it's "N" capabilities when surfing in wifi mode.

 Let It Snow
So I took the plunge and giddily purchased Mac OS 10.6 aka Snow Leopard the day it was made available. Usually, I have very little worries being an early adopter to new OS releases considering the successful upgrade experiences I've had through the years of being a Mac user.
Not so today.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard from 10.5.8, my MacBook Pro 17" would consistently drop it's internet (DHCP) connection whether it was via Ethernet (wired) or through the AirPort (wireless). I've done several supposed fixes suggested everywhere on the web with limited success:- Reset Network settings, deleted "Automatic" settings and created a new setting (called untitled)
- Zap the PRAM (hold Command+Option+P+R on restart)
- Flush the DNS cache (using: dscacheutil -flushcache on the Terminal)
These 'fixes' worked only for a few minutes, and the internet connection would eventually drop again. NOTE: Although other computers and drives were visible on my network, and Instant Messaging via Adium is still functional, which is weird, I could not connect to the internet through a browser, or connect Mail.app or even to the iTunes store.
Tired and frustrated at this point, I decided to finally call Apple Support (Case #134733179) and was suggested to try the following steps:Shutdown the MacBook Pro, remove battery, disconnect the power, and then hold the Power Key for 15 seconds. After which I was told to replace the battery, reconnect power and zap PRAM and wait for 2 chimes before letting the keys go. I was able to get connection for a while but lost it again after a few minutes of usability.
And so I called again and was told this time to try:Trash the SystemConfiguration folder (/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration) and all of it's contents... then reboot. The above suggestion seemed logical as it would obliterate any existing preferences that may be corrupted and affecting the connection setup. The system would then recreate a fresh preference file free of any lingering old settings. This again worked for a while, but sadly, my wired and wireless connection both drops within a few minutes of usage. It is also worth noting that simply restarting the MacBook Pro regains connectivity as well but drops after a few minutes on both Ethernet and Airport settings.
So today has been an unproductive day considering I spent all my efforts troubleshooting Snow Leopard (10.6) on the MacBook Pro, and couple that with the inability to use several key functionality such as SynergyKM to sync all three machines I have with one keyboard/mouse (not to mention the unpredictable behavior Adobe CS3 has been displaying and the loss of Letterbox's features on Mail) and I am now forced to downgrade back to 10.5.8 via Time Machine Restore until Apple resolves or acknowledges this problem.
In the meantime, I need to get work done and something as fundamental as a stable internet connection should have been high on Apple's "must work" priority list.
Sigh... would have been nice if it worked without glitches...
UPDATE: I'm back on the Snow Leopard wagon and with great aplomb! Thanks to those insightful folks at the InsanelyMac OSx86 forums, they suggested that I try a complete wipe and new install of Snow Leopard and THEN migrate my settings from Time Machine onto the fresh copy. That surely did the trick and now my MBP runs faster and better. My only wish now is that all the apps I'm using migrate over to 64-bit compatibility so that I can reboot my Mac into 64-bit mode
